Lesh & Donato 6.11.26

There was a moment at Bearsville Theatre tonight when it felt like the past, present, and future of American music were all sharing the same stage.

For Graham Lesh, that balancing act has never been easy. Carrying one of the most influential names in rock history comes with expectations most musicians will never know, yet he’s spent years carving out a path that feels entirely his own. I've been following that journey for a long time. His dad and I share the same birthday, and ever since my first Dead show in 1987, this music has been woven into the soundtrack of my life.

Standing beside him was Daniel Donato, one of the most fascinating young musicians to emerge from the music scene in recent years. What started as a deep love of classic country guitar has evolved into something he calls “Cosmic Country" a wide-open blend of psychedelia, improvisation, and rock & roll . It’s fucken delightful. Donato plays with the fearlessness of someone who reveres tradition but refuses to be limited by it, making him a perfect musical counterpart for Lesh.

Together, they delivered a set that felt less like a tribute to the past and more like the next chapter in an ongoing story.

The songs were rooted in tradition but never confined by it. That's always been the magic of this music. Every performance is a conversation. Every night reveals a different road forward. The destination matters less than the journey.

And in Woodstock, a town where American music history seems to linger in the woods, it all felt especially right, at least it did for me.  Capturing that little part of history in Woodstock.

Can't wait to see where they take it tomorrow.
